A few tips to help you along the way.
REMEMBER - NEVER leave babies or children unattended in or near water.
- Babies aren't co-ordinated enough to swim properly until the age or 2 or 3, but regular trips to the pool encourage confidence and fun from an early age.
- You can take your baby at any age - government health experts now say that you don't have to wait until after immunisations. Check with your midwife/health visitor as to when you (as a new mum) can go. It's a good bonding time for Dad, too.
- Start off with short visits in the pool and then build up to longer - 10 minutes first but not longer than 30 minutes if your baby is under one. Take them out if they start to shiver and wrap up warmly (hooded towels, such as Cuddledry, are great for this)
- Avoid swimming if your baby has a cold or is unwell, or if he/she has a skin complaint.
- When introducing your baby to the pool, make sure you keep eye contact and hold him/her close to you - public pools are noisy and bright and may be daunting for a baby.
- Armbands aren't suitable for young babies so try a floating ring with integral baby seat (www.travellingwithchildren.co.uk has a selection of products).
- Show your baby how to blow bubbles just below the surface - you can't inhale water when you're blowing so this is an important lesson.
- From about 6 months sit them on the side of the pool and lift them into the water with a splash - sing a fun song while you do it, too.
- Lots of children find lying on their back in the pool unnatural so lie your baby on his/her back from a young age, with their head resting on your shoulder.
- Most leisure centres with pools will have a mother & baby group where you can get advice and join others.
But, the most important thing of all is to keep safe and have fun!
