Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)
TSS is a fatal but rare disease caused by Staphylococcus aureus, a bacteria that can produce toxins in the body. Symptoms come on fast and are often severe. Menstrual TSS has been linked to the use of super-absorbent synthetics in tampons (ref:The Journal of Infectious Diseases in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 2 140-145,1994).
The warning signs of TSS include:
sudden fever; nausea; vomiting; dizziness; diarrhoea; fainting or near fainting when standing up; headache; rash that looks like sunburn

Results of a study published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases and Gynaecology, suggest that the use of 100% cotton tampons may reduce the risk of TSS, compared with tampons that contain rayon. The study was carried out on 20 tampon varieties, including Natracare's 100% organic cotton tampons, and concluded that all-cotton tampons did not produce the dangerous TSS toxin from the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus, while other tampons did.
