Why should I buy eco disposables?
3 main
reasons:
1. The manufacture - as there are fewer chemicals in
the nappies there is far less pollution going into the water system
during manufacture. They also contain recycled materials and use
renewable energy.
2. Your baby - they are much kinder to
babies' delicate skin and really help if they suffer from skin problems
such as eczema.
3. Disposal - we all know that conventional
nappies will be sitting around in landfill for generations to come.
Eco-dispodables can break down in compost - visit www.ecobaby.ie for full compost information.
This all adds up to a
guilt-free conscience as you bring a baby into a world that needs a bit
of help...
Can I try a nappy before buying?
Of course.
You can order a sample nappy for
60p to cover the cost of p&p, or a trial pack of 4 nappies
for £2.00, or even a trial pack of 4 nappies with a pack of travel wipes for £2.80.
If you can't decide which brand of
nappy to buy, there is a mixed sample pack available. We do recommend
trying a sample so that you order the correct size.

samples of the Bambo Trainer Pants.
How do I know what size nappy to order?
We
are happy to give advice with regards to sizes - please call us on 0845

trial packs as well.

What are the differences/similarities between the 2
brands of nappies that you sell?
The main difference is the
colour. They are both free from Chlorine bleaching but Moltex Öko are
beige in colour whereas Bambo Nature are white (they are oxygen
bleached).
Both brands are free from perfume, lotions, deodorants,
dyes, fragrance, chlorine. They both have a minimal amount of absorbent
gel (both brands now have a combination of conventional gel and an
environmentally friendly granule) which helps to keep the wetness away
from the baby's skin.
They both have features to ensure a good fit -
stretchy resealable fastening, leg elasticity, leakage barriers as well
as baby friendly pictures - Bambo Nature also have a stretchy waistband.
Both brands have eco-awards from their own countries.
How to choose? This
is really down to personal preference and which nappy fits your child
best. We have a customer with twins - one is in Moltex and one is in
Bambo! Try the mixed sample pack
and you'll get 2 of each.
Where are the nappies manufactured?
Moltex
Öko are made in Germany -"Öko" means "Eco" in German.
Bambo Nature are made in Denmark.
Do Moltex Öko & Bambo Nature nappies work as well as
normal disposable nappies?
Yes. They have all the features of
popular disposables such as barrier leg cuffs and a stretchy resealable
fastening system.
A minimal amount of absorbent gel is tucked well
away from the baby to create an ultra powerful absorbent core. This
keeps the wetness away from the baby's skin. Both nappies have a
combination of conventional gel and an environmentally friendly gel.
I am thinking of using real (washable) nappies but
am looking for disposables as back up.
Moltex Öko and Bambo
Nature disposable nappies are excellent companions to real nappies - we
have many customers that have real nappies for their babies but use them
at night, for nursery, childminders, when out & about and on holiday etc.
Can eco-disposable nappies help prevent nappy rash?
Yes. They are far less likely to irritate skin, cause nappy rash or an
allergic reaction, as there are no unnecessary deodorants, dyes,
lotions, antioxidants or nasty chemicals. Changing a nappy as soon as it
is soiled also helps to prevent nappy rash, the main cause of which is
the mixture of wee & poo (we don't like to get too scientific here!).
If my baby has Eczema can they use eco disposables?
Absolutely. They are gentle enough for babies with eczema and other skin
problems, as they do not contain unnecessary chemicals. Most parents see
a definite improvement in skin condition when their babies use
Moltex Öko or Bambo Nature nappies.
In fact, Naturebotts
was set up when we found out about Moltex Öko nappies as they helped
Jaco's eczema dramatically, see "
about us".
How many nappies will my baby get through in a day?
Paediatricians recommend that in a 24 hour period a newborn should be changed
10-12 times a day (every 2-3 hours), down to about 6 a day as they get
older. Nappies should be changed as soon as they are soiled. Babies
should also have some time during the day without a nappy on at all,
such as before bath time. See below for more advice on what you may need
for a newborn.
This is my first baby and I'm not sure what I'll
need - what would you recommend?
What you need and what you will
get through depends on various factors such as the size and growth rate
of the baby and which products you personally would like to use, such as
cotton wool versus wipes (see below). You may have a couple of places
where you change nappies and so wish to double up.
Take a look at
our Pregnancy Page for
advice on products and our new Knowledge Area
for general information on being pregnant and giving birth including what you
need for a new baby, at home and in hospital.
Here are some helpful pointers:
NEWBORN/MINI size nappies - 150 nappies lasts about 3- 4 weeks. As you don't know what size your baby will be when it's born, have a couple of packs of each size - remember, they'll always grow into a bigger size. Don't forget that you can buy trial packs.
Maternity Pads - you are likely to use 2 packs of 10 Natracare maternity pads and then you may be able to move onto a smaller size of pad. When your discharge finishes can vary greatly depending on factors such as whether you breast feed or bottle feed.
Breast/Nursing Pads - we have 2 types of breast pads available - Imse Vimse washable and Natracare disposable. This is a matter of personal choice - neither has unnecessary chemicals and both are soft. We do recommend buying some though - those boobs get up to all sorts when you're breastfeeding! If you are not planning on breastfeeding, or are unable to, you will still need some for the early days.
Cotton Wool- whether you use cotton balls or pleats is purely a personal choice but you can certainly get through a lot! For example, a breast fed baby's nappy contains liquid yellow poo (lovely!) at every change for the first few weeks, and you'll use roughly 3-8 balls each time depending on the severity of mess! On average a bag of cotton wool will last about 2 days at the beginning and Multi Packs are now available.
Wipes - see below regarding use of wipes. A couple of packs at the beginning for when you can't get to some warm water to use cotton wool can be helpful. Our own Naturebotts biodegradable wipes are very gentle and available in 2 pack sizes (72 or 24) with a selection of money saving multi packs.
Skin Care - newborn babies generally don't need skin care products, unless they are born with a lot of hair when you may wish to use the Earth Friendly Baby chamomile shampoo & bodywash, which is very mild. Sore bottoms can occur due to the regularity of bowel movements (see above) so a tube each of Calendula Cream and Red Clover Nappy Cream would be a good idea. The Mother Earth Cradle Cap treatment oil may also be useful for newborns.
Nappysacks - newborn babies need to be changed every couple of hours so you're getting through a lot of nappies. We can fit around 6 MINI nappies into a nappysack (ie, about half a day's worth) but you may wish to use one sack per nappy in which case we'd recommend a multi pack of four rolls. This is also useful so you can have them dotted around the house, in a changing bag etc.

When should I change from using cotton wool to
wipes to clean my baby’s bottom?
This is up to you.
Preferably leave it as long as possible but we would recommend
discussing it with your health visitor if you have any concerns. The
earliest age to use wipes would be about 3 months. Click here to see our
range of Simply
Gentle organic cotton wool or for more information about Naturebotts Biodegradable Baby Wipes.
When and why should I start using Training Pants?
Parents use Trainer Pants at
varying stages and for varying reasons. They certainly make a toddler
feel more grown up when putting on a pair of "pants" rather than lying
down for a nappy change. The idea of them is that the child can pull
them down to use the toilet/potty by themselves. The Training Pants are
useful in the early stages when there may be a lot of accidents or when
it's not convenient to have an accident (such as going shopping or being
in the car)!!
Our Washable Trainer Pants allow the child to feel the wetness but without
leakage - a really useful feature for potty training.
We have found
the Disposable
Trainer Pants useful at the swimming pool (but not for actual swimming) where it can be difficult to find a clean and dry changing area
to put on nappies - they are quick and easy to put on. There is a lot of
information available regarding potty training so do call us on 0845 226
2186 or talk to your health visitor.
